Walking Tours of Barcelona

Get to Know Barcelona on Foot – Take a Walking Tour

Barcelona is such a compact city that one of the best ways to explore it is by walking, particularly through the narrow streets of the old town. Whilst you can buy a map and set off on your own, by taking a walking tour you can concentrate on the alleyways, architecture and history rather than studying the map, and a tour guide will take you to all the best places and point out objects of interest that you might otherwise miss.

There are many different walking tours on offer, but I will just list a few of most interesting ones and those of best value here.

Viator Walking Tours

Walking in Barcelona

Viator run several Barcelona walking tours in different part of the city and at different times of the day and night. Most of the tours are through the Gothic quarter but with various themes. For example, the 'Barcelona Gothic Quarter Morning Walking Tour' takes you through the Barrio Gotico on a 2 hour tour in the morning that includes this barrio's most attractive squares and buildings.

If you feel like exploring Barcelona's street at night as well as sampling the local cuisine, opt for the 'Tapas Evening Walking Tour of Barcelona'. This tour last for approximately 3 hours and guides you through the ancient old town with stops for tapas and drinks along the way. It also goes through the famous food market – La Boqueria.

There is a Barcelona Photography Walking Tour, which is supervised by a local photographer and gives you the chance to improve your photography skills whilst guiding you to Barcelona's stunning Modernist and Gothic buildings.

All Viator's prices are quoted in US dollars, and range from $20 up to $170. Visit the Viator website for full details: Viator's Walking Tours of Barcelona.

Barcelona Turisme Walking Tours

The Barcelona Tourist Authority also run very good walking tours of the city. You can purchase tickets for guided tours directly from the Barcelona Tourism website: Buy walking tour tickets, and prices start from €12 for adults.

The tours of the gothic quarter leave from Plaza Catalunya and take 2 hours. The English tours run daily and start at 10am (although you need to be there about 10 minutes before the start). Their website has full details including a route map. If you buy your tickets online you need to collect them from Desk 14 in the Tourist Office also in Plaça Catalunya. Price is €12 for adults and €5 for children.

There is also a Picasso tour on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 4pm in English. It's probably best to book for this one as places are limited. This tour includes a visit to the Picasso Museum. The tour lasts 2 hours, which includes the time spent in the museum and prices are currently €18 for adults and €7 for children aged 4-12yrs.

The Modernisme tour takes in the Eixample district and particularly the Quadrat d'Or or Golden Square. The tour runs on Fridays and Saturdays at 4pm from June to September only, and again starts at the Tourist Office in Pl de Catalunya. Price is €12 for adults and €5 for children.

There is also a Gourmet tour, which takes in Barcelona's famous market La Boqueria. This is on Fridays and Saturdays at 10.30am. The price of €18 includes two tastings at market restaurants.

The Marina tour takes you around Barcelona's waterfront and includes a boat tour of the port on Las Golondrinas. It runs on Fridays and Saturdays at 10am and costs €15, which includes the boat trip. The tour starts from the Mirador de Colom (the Christopher Columbus column at the bottom of Las Ramblas).

All the tours have a discounted price for children aged 4 - 12 years. For further information visit the tourist website: www.barcelonaturisme.cat
